House M.D. Episode Synopsis

A kindergarten teacher who suffers from seizures begins to speak nonsense to her students and then collapses. She is brought to Princeton Hospital, where Dr. Gregory House (Hugh Laurie) and his team think they they have found a tumor. After several attempts to diagnose her condition, House tells his team to break into her home to find any clues to her illness. When Foreman off-handedly mentions seeing a ham in the refrigerator, it's all House needs to solve the case.

House M.D. Episode's Best Quotes

    House Quotes:
    • Foreman: (to Cameron) So how'd you get the job? You stab a guy in a bar fight?
    • Cuddy: Oh, I looked into that philosopher you quoted. Jagger. And you're right. You can't always get what you want, but as it turns out, if you try sometimes, you get what you need.
    • Cuddy: The son of a bi**h is the best doctor we have.
    • House: (to Wilson) People don't want a sick doctor.
    • House: (to patient) You're orange, you moron!

    • House: See that, they all assume I'm a patient because of the cane.
Foreman: Then why don't you put on a white coat like the rest of us?
House: Then they think I'm a doctor.
    House M.D. Episode Trivia
    House Episode Trivia
    • The bandages from Rebecca's tracheotomy are placed too high after the tube is removed.
    • Rebecca's name and personality is yet another reference to Sherlock Holmes--Irene Adler is a woman featured in a Sherlock Holmes story that gains Holmes' respect (and even admiration) by continuing to outwit him. House is left speechless after Rebecca manages to glean a significant portion of his personality through a brief, guarded conversation, probably better than any other person on the show has done except Jack Moriarty (who was really a "Devil's Advocate" persona created by House's own mind through most of the episode that he was in).
    • The episode is known simply as the Pilot but it has an alternate title: "Everybody Lies." This is the title that was used on the DVDs distributed to Academy members for their consideration for Emmy nominations. The DVD featured two episodes: "Everybody Lies (Pilot)" and "Detox." A videotape was also sent out to members which contained two other episodes: "Three Stories" and "The Honeymoon."
