House M.D. Episode Synopsis

Based on practically no information and no medical history about a mystery patient sent by the CIA, House is using some unorthodox methods to diagnose and treat him. Meanwhile the remaining candidates are questioning Foreman's judgment.

HOUSE EPISODE'S MEDICAL MYSTERY: PATIENT OF THE WEEK (POTW)

Location of incident:
  • John - radiation burns (attempted assassination according to the CIA)
  • Casey - being interviewed after a drag race
Name / occupation / age / sex of POTW
  • John/ CIA operative/ Male
  • Casey Alfonso/ drag racer/ Female
POTW symptom(s):
  • John: What appeared to be radiation poisoning
  • Casey: things slow down; seizure, fever, fainting
Team mis-diagnoses:
  • John: Pancreatitis from a fungal infection brought on by alcohol consumption; radiation poisoning; leukemia.
  • Casey: Miller-Fisher syndrome, lupus, multiple sclerosis, botulism, polio

House team's rule violation(s) / ethical breaches:
  • Casey's team goes behind Foreman's back (on Cameron's orders) and give her steroid treatment for MS. Her legs go numb.
  • Brennan poisoned Casey so it would appear she had polio. This was in order for the researchers to be able to pursue their research on Vitamin C for polio.

House's "Aha!" moment: When John mentioned where he'd been, House realized the "nuts" the CIA had been referring to were the actually Brazil nuts, not chestnuts. Those were causing John's symptoms.
POTW final diagnosis:
  • John: Selenosis (selenium overdose) from eating significant amounts of Brazil Nuts.
  • Casey: Initially heatstroke, later poisoned with thallium by Dr. Brennan.
