512: Painless

What form of epilepsy did the primary patient have? I know someone who is going through very similar pain and has been on narcotics for a long time, but says they don't really help much any more. He had polio as a young child, and had convinced himself (and some medical doctors) that he has Lyme disease. His is still being treated for Lyme even though all of the tests for it (not all that could possibly identify Lyme, but the most common ones) have come up negative. He gradually went from being an active, athletic hardworking person to a depressed, exhausted quitter who talks about suicide frequently and sleeps erratically. Recently, he started taking some of his wife's gabapentin (neurontin), and he says that while most of his muscle soreness still remains, the pain has gone away. I don't think any of the doctor's he's seen have tested him for any form of epilepsy. What kind of tests would have been performed for the patient in this episode?
