At Mayfield Hospital, House is in a hospital room as he begins the detox process. He is alone, hooked up to IV fluids with nothing but his bed and a bed pan. A nurse comes in and checks his vitals periodically and provides him with a new bedpan.

An orderly escorts House to the nurse’s station to get his medication and then returns to his room. He is sweating a lot and a nurse comes in to check his vitals and wipe his brow. After a while, House gets up and goes to his door. He finds it locked so he beats on the door shouting for help. Next we see House in restraints for a while. When he awakens, he looks around and no longer has his restraints on. He gets up and walks around a bit, checks his leg. He dresses himself, grabs his suitcase, tosses it on the bed and packs. He leaves his room and as he heads down the hallway, steals a hat off another patients head and puts it on. House goes to the nurse’s station, tells her the dry heaves are gone and so is he. The nurse says she will check with his doctor. House feels he is there voluntarily so he can leave until she informs him that the doctor left specific instructions.

House b601: Brokenarges into the office of Dr. Darryl Nolan, the head of the psychiatric facility. As Nolan is speaking with another doctor, House says “wow, and he’s black. I thought you’d be a little more sensitive on the slavery issue.” Nolan just smiles and dismisses the other doctor. House says, "No painkillers, no hallucinations, leg hurts but it’s manageable. Great job, gonna miss you, want to start missing you as soon as possible." Nolan informs House that legally he can leave whenever he wants but Nolan recommends House stay. Nolan says if House thought the hallucinations were from his Vicodin problem, why didn’t he check himself into a rehab facility. Nolan feels the Vicodin problem was manageable until two of House’s colleagues died and then his father. Nolan tells House that his issues run deeper than Vicodin. He wants to transfer him to their long term ward for medication management and talk therapy. House tells him he’s hung up on one thing, he can leave whenever he wants. Nolan tells House he can’t go back to practicing medicine. House replies “I don’t want to practice medicine. I want to be an astronaut." Nolan informs House that if he wants his state astronauts license, he is going to need Nolan’s recommendation.

House is brought to Ward 6. He checks out the other patients in the main room. He sits down with Dr. Beasley and asks her, “Brass tax, what do I have to do and how long do I have to be here.” She tells him it depends on him. The process is pretty basic, for him to take medication, participate in therapy, and set goals. House tells her he’s already done that, his goal is to get her boss to write the letter he wants him t o write. He then tells her to begin the process and he plans on turning the ward upside down making Beasley and Nolan’s lives so unmanageable that they will do whatever they have to to get rid of him.

House enters his room and begins to open his suitcase. A man enters the room and asks House who he is then continues to talk non-stop. The man complains about the staff lecturing him about manic depression and taking his medication. He admits that he stopped taking his meds because he wanted to because there is nothing wrong with him. He said they keep dragging him back there when he does but feels like his medications slow him down and that’s when things start to happen. He finally introduces himself as Juan Alvirez but everyone calls him Alvie. He asks House what he is to call him to which House responds “you can call me House.” Alvie breaks into a song “He’s a brick, house….” (1977 Song sung by The Commodores)

House takes off, heading down the hallway while Alvie follows him and tells him he’ll give him the run down. House meets Annie, who has been in a catatonic state and hasn’t spoken in 10 years. House bangs his cane on the glass window and tells the staff he wants a new room. Alvie laughs and tells House he’s funny. While Alvie continues babbling, House tries to get the staff’s attention with no luck. House starts to leave the main room when one patient throws himself on the floor, crying that his head hurts. The nurse comes out and tells him he won’t be getting any Haldol so the man stops complaining. Alvie explains that the man’s name is Connor but everyone calls him “Hal.” When he begins to explain the reasoning, House tells him he gets it. House sees the piano, tries to open it and finds it locked.

601: BrokenDuring group therapy, Dr. Beasley introduces Alvie and then House as “Greg.” House tells her not to worry about his name as he’s just passing through and doesn’t want to break any hearts. House sits back during therapy and points out everyone’s issues (paranoid, anorexia, claustrophobic, suicidal). House notices the woman next to him had slit her wrists and points it out. Dr. Beasley tells House that there are some things they don’t talk about. House sarcastically replies, “I’m sorry, is suicide taboo? Gosh I’ve broken a rule. I just want to kill myself.” Dr. Beasley ends group and tells House he is not the first patient to be uncooperative. She asks him to follow her to the club room, which turns out to be isolation.

When House is released from isolation, he joins the rest of the patients outside. Dr. Beasley talks to him to find out if House is ready to play nice. She tells him to just talk and be honest. House joins the other patients who are playing basketball. He uses his honesty to play on the fears and issues of the other patients until one by one, they all leave the game. He shoots the ball and makes the shot. He tells Dr. Beasley that it is reward to reach out, grabs his jacket and heads back in.

As House climbs the stairs to the third floor, he hears someone playing the piano. He walks inside and sarcastically tells the woman, “I think you will find music therapy more affective if the patients were actually inside. “ The woman tells House she is Annie’s sister-in-law. She says she plays because Annie’s head bobs to the music, it’s the only reaction she gets from her. After checking Annie's pulse, House tells Lydia that he hates to burst her bubble but Annie’s head is bobbing to her pulse, not the music. Dr. Beasley and two orderlies walk in and House tells them he’ll lead this time. He tosses them his cane and walks up to them as they grab him and walk him back to isolation.

601: BrokenHouse lies on the bed in isolation. Dr. Beasley walks in and he sarcastically tells her to close the door as she’s letting the cool air out. She asks him if he’s ready to get on board or if she should leave him in there. House follows her out into the main room. He sees Alvie and another patient playing table tennis with no paddles or net. As House starts to walk by, Alvie wants him to join. House announces to the patients, that he had time to think and he misdirected his anger and treated the other patients unfairly. He says the real jerks are the doctors because they give them table tennis with no net or paddles. He winds up the other patients who begin to argue and bang on the table because they don’t have the proper items to play the game. They quiet down when Dr. Nolan walks in, holds up paddles and says that House is right, he feels everyone can handle paddles. House is surprised that the doctor gave in so easily to the patients demands. Nolan says House is a born leader and he can teach the other patients something.

That night in his room, House begins to devise his next plan. The next day during group therapy Dr. Beasley introduces a new patient, Steve. Steve says he’s the “Freedom Master. He’s like Clark Kent, Bruce Wayne or Peter Parker with a secret identity.” Alvie replies “Cool. We have more Jesuses in here than superheroes.” The other patients inquire about Steve’s superpowers. House gets up and walks to the windows. Steve asks why Annie doesn’t talk and feels that someone needs to save her. Dr. Beasley suggests they all take five minutes and get to know Steve. She walks over to House and tells him she knows he’s scheming, working on his next elaborate plan. While she’s talking, House sees Nolan in the parking lot, where he kisses and then leaves with a woman. House turns around to Dr. Beasley, smiles and says “God, if only you’d said that two minutes ago, before I came up with my new scheme. Now I’m committed.”

House approaches Alvie and asks what privileges he has. When he learns Alvie can move around on different floors, he uses Alvie for his next scheme. House has Alvie break into Nolan’s office to find out who the woman was that Nolan left with. Alvie gets on board with the plan and does as House asks. He tells House the calendar was only marked with a big red “x”, no names or anything else.
601: Broken

House and Alvie chat that night in their room and devise a scheme so House can use the phone. So the next day. House and Alvie fake a fight while watching television. Dr. Beasley orders Haldol to calm House down. After the orderlies bring House to his room and leave, Alvie comes in and House spits out the Haldol. Hal is a level 4 and has phone privileges so House bribes Hal with the drugs to use his phone time. House uses the phone and calls Wilson. He wants Wilson to look up the license plate of the mystery woman and get him a name. House believes Nolan is cheating on his wife and wants to blackmail him with this information so Nolan will sign off on House’s reinstatement. Wilson says Nolan had already warned him House might try something like that and turns House down. Feeling defeated, House returns to his room and tells Alvie he is his only friend.

House begins to go along with the program. He cooperates with the doctors, plays basketball and card games with the other patients. The more House goes along with them, the more privileges House gains. When House reaches a Level 3, Alvie teases him and says “I’m so proud of my roomie, I taught him everything he knows.”

During visitations, House meets up with Lydia, Annie’s sister-in-law again. They chat about Annie’s condition. Lydia tells House how Annie just withdrew from everyone for no reason. She admits she plays the piano when she comes to visit to get a response from Annie.

House meets with another doctor to talk about his medication. The doctor asks about side affects and House says he has none. He’s is convinced House isn’t taking his medication because he doesn’t have the side affects and his inconsistency in his stories. House appears to get defensive and asks if the doctor wants him to take a urine test. The doctor hands House a cup to pee in, shocking House. They both go into the bathroom and House asks to have some privacy, which he is denied. The doctor does allow House to go into one of the stalls. When House enters one of them, Hal is crouched on the toilet. House hands him the cup to pee in. He turns away and begins to sing a song while Hal pees in the cup. House flushes the toilet, comes out and hands the doctor the filled cup saying ‘get it while it’s hot.” House passes the urine test, giving him a level 4. The doctor apologizes to House and then asks “Freedom Master” for help. He wants Steve to move the piano away from the window. House challenges the doctor when he tries to tell Steven that he is delusional. Steve points out a music box in the office and says that they stole Annie’s voice box. The doctor tells Steve his wife is dead and he needs to move on. Steve continues to say that Annie’s voice is in the office and tries to get in claiming Annie’s voice is in there. The orderlies take Steve away.

The staff hold a “re-birthday” celebration because Susan, the suicide patient is going home. House notices that Steve is not included in the ceremony. He goes to his room and finds a heavily drugged Steve lying in his bed. The doctor insists that Steve is fine, just delusional. As House argues with the doctor, Nolan asks House to come and chat with him.

In Nolan’s office, House expresses his anger at the fact that Susan is being released and Steve is drugged. He insists to Nolan that he can be released and get outpatient treatment. House pulls out his pills and says he’s doing so well that he doesn’t need to take his pills. Dr. Nolan dumps out the crystals from one of the capsules and asks House to lick it. When House doesn’t, he realizes that the medicine is really sugar. Nolan tells House that his depression tests were increasing too rapidly and he figured out House wasn’t taking his medications so he switched him to a placebo. Nolan tells House to stop fighting the system and let Nolan do his job.
The next day, Lydia pulls up with a cello to visit Annie. It’s too heavy for her to bring in and House offers to carry it up for her. After they exchange some sarcastic remarks, House offers for “Clark Kent” (aka Steve) to carry it for her to help him out of his depression. Steve gets the cello out of the car and House convinces Lydia to let him drive Steve around to feel the air blowing through his hair, so Steve feels like he’s flying. As they get going, House admits he’s stealing her car and kidnapping Steve. Lydia asks to be let out and allows House to take off.

House brings Steve to a local carnival. He brings him into a ride where it simulates they are free-flying. Steve begins to relax and enjoys himself. When they are done, they head back to the parking garage, where House left Lydia’s car. Steve is happy and talking excitedly. House goes to the car but realizes Steve didn’t follow. House turns around and sees Steve pretending to fly from the side railing of the parking garage. House tries to talk him down but Steve turns around, thanks House and then jumps from the railing.

At the hospital, Dr. Nolan joins House and informs him of the extent of Steve’s injuries. He tells House Steve is lucky to be alive.

2nd hour:
House sits in Dr. Nolan’s office, tapping his fingers against the arms of the chair. He asks Dr. Nolan how it works. Nolan tells him he talks and Nolan listens. He asks House what he wants. House tells him he wants to be happy. House admits he’s afraid to take the medication because he fears losing his edge and who he is. Nolan tells him he know it’s hard for him, to ask for help but he has to trust him. House takes his pills and says “mmm delicious.”

Later, at the nurse's counter, House tells them he is there for his communion wafer. After he takes his medication, he turns around to face Alvie. Alvie believes House didn’t take his medication and checks his mouth. Alvie is convinced House is still scamming the doctors because they don't take medication but House insists he‘s not. When House confirms he took his medications, Alvie believes the doctors broke House. House says, "They didn’t break me, I'm already broken." He tells Alvie to go back to his loser life and Alvie replies that he hates House.

Nolan enters House’s room with a suit and says he has an assignment for House. He asks House what he’s learned in four weeks about the other patients. House gives him basic feedback about three patients. Nolan’s assignment is for House to go to a party with him, mingle and engage in conversation with other guests. House is to connect with someone at the party, which turns out to be Lydia. He wants to know why she visits Annie five times a week. Lydia says that Annie is her best friend. When she became catatonic, Lydia’s husband stopped visiting after a few years but she continues to visit five times week. She admits she misses Annie. As she’s getting ready to leave, she leans in and kisses House.

In Nolan’s office the next morning, House admits that Lydia kissed him, then says they kissed each other. House accuses Nolan of being judgmental when Nolan doesn‘t say very much. Rather than address how uncomfortable he is with the situation, House deflects the conversation back to Nolan. He wants to know why Nolan only has his father on speed dial, no personal items in his office and if he’s cheating on his wife. Nolan finally gets House to admit he’s afraid and doesn’t know what the kiss meant.

House runs into Lydia during visitation and asks why she kissed him. Lydia tells him she likes him and it felt like a nice way of showing him that. He hands her his cane, then turns around and begins playing on the piano. He turns when he hears the door and sees a bandaged up Steve being wheeled in.

601: BrokenBack in Nolan’s office, Nolan asks House why he focuses on his failures rather than his successes. House replies, “Success only lasts until someone screws them up. Failure is forever.” Nolan says, “Your not god House. Your just another screwed up human being who needs to move on.” Nolan feels House needs to apologize to Steve and let himself move on to feel better, and then allow himself to keep feeling better.

House enters the main room and approaches Steve but isn‘t able to say anything. Dr. Beasley comes in and begins group therapy. She informs the patients that they will have a Mayfield Talent show in two weeks. She tries to talk Alvie into singing and preparing something in advance. Alvie isn’t comfortable with that, he feels he is better doing it on the spot. She tries to get Steve to talk but he doesn’t. House challenges her and says Steve won’t speak. He then realizes Steve and Annie are looking at the same thing. He insists it’s the music box locked in the nurse’s station. Dr. Beasley thinks he’s acting out but House convinces her he’s not. She gives the orderly permission to get what House wants. House walks over to Steve, leans down and puts the music box in Steve’s hand. House tells Steve he’s not broken, everything in him is healing. He begins shouting at Steve to speak. Nolan walks up and tells them to take a break and informs House that he is trying to fix instead of healing himself again.

Lydia shows up for a visit and hands House some sheet music. He asks her what it is…. She tells him it’s two people having fun. House is worried about someone getting hurt. She tells him she was happy five minutes ago and now she’s not, how is it better. House hands her back the sheet music and says goodbye, then gets up and walks away.

House receives a note during the next group therapy session. It’s a day pass with a request for him to join Dr. Nolan. When he arrives at a hospital room, he finds Dr. Nolan sitting beside his father. Nolan requested House for a consult on his father, Darryl Nolan Sr. House reviews the chart and tells Nolan that his father’s brain has been replaced by blood and that all of the doctor’s were correct, there‘s no hope for his father. House begins his usual insults but Nolan won’t hear it. He tells House “not now.” House looks at Nolan, who is crying, then pulls up a stool and sits with him.

House returns to Mayfield and finds Lydia crying in the main room. He apologizes to her for pushing her away. Lydia says she’s not crying because of him. She brought Annie’s cello hoping it would spark interest. House jokes and says he takes back his apology. House draws her into his arms. She sobs on his shoulder as he hangs up his cane, and then begins to slowly dance with Lydia. They go into one of the office’s and kiss. One thing leads to another and House and Lydia have sex. When they are done, House has tears in his eyes.

601: BrokenThe talent show has finally arrived. The patients put on a talent show for staff and family. Each of the patients performs on stage. When Alvie’s turn arrives, he gets on stage and begins to improvise is rap song, only to get stumped. After a few seconds, House chimes in from the back of the room and fills in the gap. He does this twice and Alvie finally yells “Dr. House is in the house…” reluctantly, House joins Alvie on stage and helps Alvie finish his performance.

The next day, House goes up to Steve to apologize. House tells Steve he was trying to prove a point and be right. He put Steve in a dangerous place and Steve got hurt. House says it’s his fault and he’s sorry. From across the room, Nolan sees him and nods his head. House wheels Steve past Annie and stops. House backs up and Annie looks down at Steve. Steve hands her the music box and Annie leans down and takes its. She opens it and listens to the music. She then shuts it and thanks Steve. He tells her she’s welcome. House and Dr. Nolan are amazed as it’s the first non-catatonic moment Annie has had in ten years.

Lydia shows up for visitation and House tells her he has a surprise and leads her into the common room. When she walks in, she sees Annie is playing the cello for the patients and staff. Lydia smiles and cries as she listens to Annie play for the first time in years.

The next day, Annie has a “rebirthday” celebration. House is shocked to find out Annie is leaving so soon. He flies into Nolan’s office and demands to know what’s going on. Nolan tells him that the family is moving to Arizona and Annie is being transferred to a rehab facility there. House asks for an overnight pass. Nolan tries to talk him out of it but House insists.

House pulls up in a cab outside Lydia’s home and her son answers the door. Lydia domes out, crying and tells him they are moving because of her husbands job. They hadn't been able to do move sooner because of Annie but now they can. She tells him she doesn’t want to leave but she doesn’t want to leave her children either. She puts her hand on his cheek and House tells her to not go. She tells him she has to and says goodbye.

Nolan leaves the hospital and heads to the parking lot. He finds House sitting by his car and jokes that it’s not the most effective use of House’s overnight pass. House tells him Lydia is gone and he’s upset. Nolan lets House know that he is signing the letter to have House’s medical license reinstated. He tells House he got hurt, he’s hurting and sought him out to talk about it rather than hiding in a Vicodin bottle.

The next day, House has his “rebirthday” celebration to return home. After he blows out his candle, he drops his face right into the cake, causing staff and patients to burst into laughter.

Alvie watches House leave the hospital from the window. He sees House walk to the bus station. Alvie turns around and heads to the nurse’s station. Dr. Beasley opens the door and ask Alvie what he wants. Alvie says his medication, he wants to get better. The doctor smiles and turns to get Alvie’s medications for him.

The bus pulls up to the bus stop and House gets on. He walks to the back of the bus and sits. With Mayfield Hospital in the background, House smiles as he looks ahead…..
