Dr. James Wilson

Go back: House Characters

DR. JAMES WILSON, played by Robert Sean Leonard
House M.D. Character ProfileCharacter's backstory:
Dr. James Wilson is the head of Oncology at Princeton-Plainsboro Teaching Hospital.
Dr. Wilson is Jewish and has two brothers, one of which is missing and presumed to be homeless.

Wilson has an undergraduate degree at McGill University (Montreal, Canada) and higher degrees from Columbia and University of Pennsylvania.

Wilson has been married and divorced three times and has no children. He is Dr. House's best friend and has known him for at least 17 years.

Wilson is a worry wart - carefree is a term that would not be used to describe him. He seems to have come from a family where there was conflict, absence and loss, which made it difficult for him to understand what 'normal' is in human relationships. He seems to be a middle child, the one who always 'negotiated' his way through family issues, which is largely how he approaches his work. He puts others feelings and needs ahead of his own, which satisfies him on one level, but does not meet his own needs. This inability to express and act on what he wants is likely what has caused the breakup of virtually every serious relationship he's had.

House on the other hand has exploited this character trait to his benefit, and uses Wilson as a doormat when it suits him. Wilson for his part seems to live vicariously through House and derives pleasure in being his 'foil' - the Watson to House's Holmes.
