is 13 going to die?

Is it going to be a false positive, or is House going to do something about it? 6  out of 12 found this valuable. Do you?

That is a very good question. I am not sure if he can do anything to fix it if it really is pos. On the other hand why hirer her if she is going to die so soon? 2  out of 3 found this valuable. Do you?

There's still no known cure for Huntington's, but recent evidence has shown that EPA, a type of Omega-3 fatty acid, can slow or stop the progression of the disease. An EPA-containing drug is undergoing FDA trials now. They've used experimental medicine in the show before, so they could potentially use this.

Also, Thirteen is only in her late 20s or early 30s, assuming she's fresh out of residency. Huntington's takes a bit longer than that to present itself...most people start showing the more obvious symptoms at around 40 or 50 and live for about 15 or so years after that. This is why it can be such a sneaky disease--if it killed people when they were only in their 20s or 30s, they probably wouldn't have had kids by that point and therefore wouldn't have unknowingly passed on the gene before they started showing symptoms.

i think that 13's test result is a false positive.i'm not a doctor so i don't know what other disease has the same simptoms but i think that house is going to help 13 to figure out what's wrong with her.this is how i see it:house will find out the results (one way or another) and without telling the team he'll help 13,run some tests and finally figure this out.she probably has something serious but not this kind of degenerative disease 3  out of 6 found this valuable. The Huntington's test is foolproof; there are no false positives.

If they are going to use EPA, then there wont be that much to talk about, so i guess House is going to play round with her, and then somehow cure her. Or that doctor from frozen can come in and replace her.... Guess we will never know... until SEANSON 5 1  out of 2 found this valuable. Do you?

"how come you're so sure that the blood test for huntington's is a foolproof?

Mad skills. Kidding. :p

Short answer: The Huntington's gene doesn't actually kill you, but the faulty protein that it codes for does. The test observes whether this protein is present. The only way that a test could come back positive incorrectly is if she received a blood transfusion from another Huntington's patient immediately before taking the test, or if the machine was broken. And I highly doubt this is the case, being that it correctly labeled her negative for all those other genetic conditions.

Long answer: The way Huntington's works is that the gene causes the protein called "huntingtin" to be expressed incorrectly. On one of the ends of huntingtin, there's a sequence of nitrogenous bases that are repeated over and over (called a CAG repeat). In a Huntington's patient, there are a lot more repeats of CAG then there should be. This is exactly what the Huntington's test measures--how many CAG repeats are on the protein.

Normal people have less than 27 repeats; Huntington's victims have at least 36 repeats, but they may not actually develop severe symptoms before they die unless they have at least 40. There's also an "intermediate" phase between 28 and 35 repeats where a person doesn't technically have the disease, but their kids have a higher risk of contracting it.

There's a 2% chance of a false NEGATIVE, but a false POSITIVE is impossible assuming the equipment is working properly.

It is kind of strange that they would take her on and then give her Huntington's. They already did the whole, " now they have to cure one of their own", thing. I am sure they will take it somewhere surprising. Unless, the plan from the begining was to not keep her too long. 1  out of 2 found this valuable. Do you?

In my biology class we just did group reports on genetic diseases and one of the groups did huntingtons. It's a horrible disease that can cause unintentional jerks and memory loss, but not usually death. All I know is exercise is a good combatant to it.
OH THE PLOT TWIST DRAMA!

I don't care what's wrong with her or the test, but I don't want her to leave!!!!

maybe she was testing someone else's blood, but we didn't see that part...

No, there was too much emotion in her response for it to be someone else's blood.

13 and House fits quite well together, both running away from their problems. It would be so cool if they go out! 2  out of 3 found this valuable. Do you?
